Inflation rose less than expected in May, a month when the effects of higher tariffs were starting to become more widespread.
Consumer prices rose 0.1% last month, while the annual inflation rate increased to 2.4% from a four-year-low of 2.3% notched in April, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The better-than-expected inflation reading is welcome news for Americans worn down by the higher cost of living and who are fearful of whether tariffs will drive that higher. However, while the tariff impacts weren’t prevalent in Wednesday’s report, the latest CPI was lightly pockmarked with potential indications of price hikes and weaker consumer demand.
May’s overall inflation readings came in better than expected. Economists had projected that falling gas prices would keep the overall monthly inflation rate in check while year-ago comparisons became less favorable.
Forecasts called for a 0.2% monthly rise and for the CPI to increase 2.5% on an annual basis, according to FactSet.
Stock futures jumped higher after the data release. Dow futures were up 95 points, or 0.22%. S&P 500 futures rose 0.3% and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.4%.
For now, a closely watched measurement of underlying inflation is holding steady.
The core CPI, which excludes the highly volatile categories of food and energy, rose just 0.1% from April and held pat at 2.8%.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
The Enemy Media is salivating at the thought of this! May they be sorely disappointed!
"Economists have anticipated that price pressures would continue to build as businesses try to adapt to President Donald Trump’s sharp escalation in the US tariff rate and unpredictable trade policy.
However, they’ve also cautioned that it may take some time before higher tariff rates result in pricier items for consumers and, ultimately, higher inflation rates."

Inflation from the tariffs would not be a reduction in the value of the dollar - too many dollars printed increasing the money supply to chase after too few goods.
Much more concerned with the deficits/debt/debt service than tariffs at this point.

Note how the actually hope things will get worst and effectively say as much.

American consumers pay half the cost of tariffs, but the American dollar gets full benefit of the deficit reduction from tariff collection.
Why should that be inflationary CNN? Isn’t deficit reduction anti-inflationary?

But, bit, but, I thought tariffs were a tax and would drive prices up 150%???

“less than expected”? When it rose under Biden, it was “unexpected”... by them.

They seem to not notice that at the same time as the tariffs are kicking in, the dollar has been weakening, making imports cheaper. Mitigating possible cost increases from the tariffs.

Checked eggs yesterday at an upscale market - they were $3.99/dozen for the house brand.

We’ve got butter on sale here at the Kwik Trip for $2.99/# limit four. (But you can hit 2 stores in my town alone!)
I’m stocking up as I do whenever they run this sale. They also have ground beef 75% lean, for the same price, but I still have plenty of hamburger from, ‘Chuck.’ ;)
I haven’t tracked eggs, as we have laying hens. Is that a lower price for you? Hope so!

Yep, taxes take money out of the system and overall will be deflationary.
Some importers like drugs will eat the tariffs because of existing high margins. Where margins are tight, importers may increase prices to stay in the black. If so, there will be less money available for everything else, and pressure will be on to lower those prices or lose sales.
Much of what is essential is sourced domestically - food, energy, housing, as well as services like education and medical. A lot of what we import tends to be more discretionary- “toys” and apparel, cars and appliances. We can often do without or put off buying it.

Leftards’ concern about possible inflation rose 500% relative to their past indifference about real inflation.

500% is a bit low for that scale...

Especially since their previous concern was at 0%. Any concern would be infinity percent of zero.

Yes! A dozen eggs a couple of weeks ago was running between $7.99 to $12.00/dozen. It was crazy and I stopped buying them.
Of course with gas and diesel the prices that they are here, and everything coming in on trucks, our prices are going to be higher.
Glad I have a lot of fruits and vegetables coming in - boysenberries are ripening and I’m hoping to have enough to make jam for gifts.

If immigrant farm workers are deported, the price of food will rise.
If immigrant construction workers are deported the cost of construction and new housing will rise.
If red states like TX, TN, GA, FL were to go DOGE at the state level and reduce state regulations and let the free market decide, then that would reduce prices...especially of housing.
But we all think it is somebody else that must act and not us.

‘Boysenberry.’
I had never heard of them! Interesting cross of four different berries. New Zealand is the ‘Boysenberry Hub’ for international sales. I learned something today. ;)
I have a Raspberry patch, but it totally needs to be re-done. I had Blackberries at my other farm; my kids loved them. I grow Strawberries, but that patch needs to be expanded, too.
We have wild Black Cap Raspberries in abundance, so I pick them in August, freeze them on cookie sheets, bag them up and then we eat those all Winter on yogurt or cottage cheese, or I make a sauce for frozen yogurt. Two, 1-gallon freezer bags lasted us until Spring this past year.
What is this? The Garden Thread? ;)

Agreed. Housing is really a mess. Glad I’m settled and not just starting out right now.
I bought my first home* in 1986 with President Reagan at the helm and a VA Housing Loan. That started me on my way to being a Real Estate Magnate, ala President Trump. *SMIRK*
*A Cape Cod, 800 square feet! But a corner lot and a nicely fenced-in yard. $60K. Score! :)
