NEW RESOURCES

CODART: Fifty French Collections of Dutch and Flemish Art Added to the CODART Website. “Over the past few months, the CODART website has been expanded with a large number of collection summaries of Dutch and Flemish art in French museums. More than 50 public institutions in France are involved, all of which hold significant collections of objects made in the Low Countries before 1750.”

Dartmouth College: Dartmouth Team Launches Public Database on Soil Fungi. “In a new study published in Scientific Data, Dartmouth researchers present a comprehensive database that catalogues the spore traits of 344 mycorrhizal fungi species. By consolidating existing but neglected knowledge of mycorrhizal traits, the database will help scientists study how fungi—and the plants they support—respond to stressors such as climate change and land use.”

AROUND THE SEARCH AND SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD

Library of Congress: Preserving a History of Digital Mapmaking: Inside the Geospatial Software and File Formats Documentation Web Archive. “In this interview, Tim St. Onge and Meagan Snow explain how web archiving is preserving documentation essential to understanding the evolution of modern cartography. They outline the motivations behind the Geospatial Software and File Formats Documentation Web Archive, describe their curatorial approach, and highlight the collection’s value for both current and future researchers.”

Mashable: TikTok trend features women protecting soft-spoken boyfriends showing off their special interests. “That TikTok seems to have inspired other couples to show off everything from a painted turtle, to golf clubs, to even more plants. Oftentimes the women in the background mime that they’re watching you or indicate you better be excited. The comments often feign fear at the woman’s threats while also admiring the work of the meek guy. It’s good, sweet fun.”

SECURITY & LEGAL

AFP: Dutch suggest social media ban for under-15s. “The Dutch government Tuesday advised parents to forbid children under 15 from using social media apps like TikTok and Snapchat, the latest country to propose curbs over mental health concerns.”

The Register: 23andMe hit with £2.3M fine after exposing genetic data of millions. “The UK’s data watchdog is fining beleaguered DNA testing outfit 23andMe £2.31 million ($3.13 million) over its 2023 mega breach.”

RESEARCH & OPINION

British Council: Digital Cultural Heritage: Imagination, innovation and opportunity. “Cultural heritage practitioners globally are developing increasingly imaginative technical solutions, and fostering creative innovation to safeguard rich histories, often in areas where conflict and climate change present significant challenges. However, while technology can democratise tools, create new public spaces, and break down long-standing barriers to cultural information, it can also reinforce historic biases, perpetuate economic, social and cultural inequalities, and have damaging environmental impacts.”

SFGate: One of ChatGPT’s popular uses just got skewered by Stanford researchers. “A new study from Stanford computer science Ph.D. student Jared Moore and several co-authors has ‘touched a nerve,’ Moore told SFGATE, with its argument that chatbots like ChatGPT should not replace therapists because of their dangerous tendencies to express stigma, encourage delusions and respond inappropriately in critical moments.”

University of Copenhagen: New research warns of digital dependency in primary schools. “Danish primary schools have become dependent on Google technologies. This threatens privacy, democracy, and educational autonomy, according to a new study from the University of Copenhagen.”

OTHER THINGS I THINK ARE COOL

Boing Boing: The next project from the Untitled Goose Game devs looks equally cozy and chaotic. “It was 2019’s Untitled Goose Game that put Australian studio House House on the map, but aside from a regular cadence of updates and ports for that game, their output since then has largely dwindled. Now we know why: House House’s next project, Big Walk, has been officially revealed, and it looks unique enough to justify every second of that extended development time.” Good evening, Internet…
