The Left’s Reductio ad Hitlerum Obsession with ICE Raids

Whenever the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement, it is only a matter of time before some lunatic, anti-borders politician decides that the U.S. has suddenly found itself an oompah band and is three beer steins away from becoming Nazi Germany.

Just in the last few months, Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker accused the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of engaging in “Nazi” tactics and “Gestapo-style abductions;” and former Minnesota governor Tim Walz referred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as “Donald Trump’s modern Gestapo.”

Meanwhile, during President Trump’s first term, Congressional Representative  Alexandria Ocasio Cortez regularly compared ICE detention centers to “concentration camps.”

This tactic is fairly common among historically illiterate buffoons like Pritzker, Walz and Ocasio Cortez.

In fact, it’s so common it actually has a name: the reductio ad Hitlerum – a term coined by Leo Strauss, a German-Jewish professor of political science at the University of Chicago.

The reductio ad Hitlerum is a species of logical fallacy, known as a “fallacy of irrelevance” wherein the horrors of the Nazi genocide are invoked in an attempt to establish guilt by association and foreclose reasonable debate.

It works something like this: The Gestapo arrested innocent Jews in targeted raids. Therefore, because ICE uses targeted raids to apprehend immigration law breakers, ICE’s motives must be the same as those of the Gestapo.

Needless to say, the mere fact that Subject A appears to share one or more superficial attributes with the indisputably wicked Subject B does not, ipso facto, mean that Subject A is also indubitably vile.

“ The reductio ad Hitlerum is a species of logical fallacy,”

Good article, but no, it’s not an -actual- logical fallacy. It’s an internet meme that some professor started. It said the first person to mention Hitler lost the argument. However, there are numerous times and places that comparing the policies of the third Reich or the USSR is completely legitimate.

But this reduction to Hitler, is not an actual logical fallacy.

For Pritzker’s rantings, I think it is more a case of ipso fatso.

The Secretary of the Treasury shall set up an ICE Bank System and take reasonable steps to ensure its successful operation, which may include requiring a fee to open an account and periodic account servicing fees.

All persons and entities who engage in any type of physical real property activity must use the ICE Bank System to take payment:
1. after December 31, 2025, for such activity in Florida counties on the Gulf of Mexico having at least 50,000 people according to the US census,
2. after January 31, 2026, for such activity in the District of Columbia and Florida counties on the Atlantic Ocean,
3. after February 28, 2026, for such activity in Dallas County, Texas, Tarrant County, Texas and Harris County, Texas and adjacent counties,
4. after March 31, 2026, for such activity in Fulton County, Georgia and adjacent counties,
5. after April 30, 2026, for such activity in Bexar County, Texas, Travis County, Texas and adjacent counties,
6. after May 31, 2026, for such activity in Fairfax County, Virginia, Henrico County, Virginia and adjacent counties,
7. after June 30, 2026, for such activity in all other political subdivisions in which the ICE Bank System has set up a branch at least two whole months previously.

Failure to do so shall be considered a felony and void the right to receive or retain payment or corresponding amounts and all such payments and amounts shall be subject to confiscation as the Secretary of Homeland Security may specify.

Such physical real property activity shall be deemed to include building facility cleaning under contract and all building construction, building repair, building painting, septic system work, building site preparation, irrigation work, paving, landscaping, landscape maintenance, fencing and mowing.

Employees who do such work as a minor part of their workplace efforts such a waiter or retail store employee cleaning up, a cowboy mending a cattle fence shall be exempt for their work as such an employee.

Agricultural employees shall be exempt, except in the named counties, with respect to their agricultural work on properties of a type typically eligible for an agricultural property tax exemption in many states.

The ICE shall have the power to void liens it reasonably deems contrary to the underlying intent of this law. Subversive failure to cooperate shall be a felony and shall permanently nullify any right of the violator to receive work-related government funding.

The identity of each customer and person to have account access shall be verified via verification of account holders’ domestic government photo ID before an account is activated and one year later and within 30 days of each account holder’s even numbered birthdays.

Violators shall be subject to a fine reflecting the lack of compliance and a term of imprisonment of 12 months for willful violation, or any lesser term the Secretary of Homeland Security may specify.

A property owner who conspires to subvert this law may also be fined up to three times the apparent extent of the conspiracy.

When I go to vote here in Florida, my ID gets verified by electronic means.

Passport? Yes!

State ID card? Yes!

How about reductio ad no-duh, which is what I’d apply to your comment.

I doubt there were any Mexicans in Germany illegally during the Third Reich who were deported.

To: reasonisfaith

Too bad sport. People use the Hitler rule as though it is an actual logical fallacy, or as though it carries weight. Usually it’s when we are pointing out leftist behavior, or pointing out that Hitler was a leftist, or when students enthusiastically agree with Hitler quotes before they know who said it.
