Careers in Crisis

Because of new technology, living in the 21st century is much different than living in other time periods. While technological advances have transformed the world in many good ways, there are also some side effects. For instance, some industries that always seemed to be looking for new workers are now becoming a thing of the past.

Farmer

Working on the family farm used to be the norm, but new transportation options have made this formerly local career choice into a global affair. The United States now imports much of its food supply instead of relying on its own agricultural industry. Even with the added cost of transportation, it's often cheaper to buy produce from foreign farms.

Postal Service Worker

People just don't mail things like they used to. Bills can now be sent online, and an appointment reminder is just as likely to end up in an inbox as a mailbox. It's cheaper and fast to send things virtually instead of physically, so it's no wonder that this career is going out of style.

Reporter

Nowadays, people can read their favorite blogs when they want the news. Sure, some people still read the newspaper or watch the news on the television, but many choose to surf the web to find out about what's happening in the world. With more people reading blogs and websites run by individuals instead of corporations, there's less of a demand for career reporters.

Travel Agent

Vacation-goers used to rely on travel agents to plan their getaways, but not anymore. Both official destination websites and websites that are made to help travelers compare deals help individuals and families plan their own vacations. Travel agents are still around, but they're becoming more and more obsolete as time goes on.

File Clerk

It's hard to be a file clerk when there's nothing to file. Almost all important documents are starting to be stored electronically, and while people are still needed to handle those documents, less manpower is needed. More modern electronic filing systems even seem to run themselves.

There's no doubt that technology is useful, but it doesn't come without drawbacks. Jobs that were once plentiful are now in danger of becoming unneeded. It will not only be hard to get careers in certain fields - it will also be hard for some workers to keep their jobs.
